Adams County Receives Two Geothermal Energy Grants

July 10th, 2025

The Colorado Energy Office (CEO) announced Adams County is receiving funding for two projects from the state’s Geothermal Energy Grant Program (GEGP) to support geothermal heating initiatives. As part of the $1.6 million awarded across the state from this program, Adams County is receiving $291,000 for the Waymire Dome at Riverdale Regional Park and $51,000 for the air traffic control tower at Colorado Air and Space Port (CASP).

The funded initiatives will enable Adams County to plan and install geothermal heat pumps and thermal energy networks (TEN) that deliver low-cost, energy-efficient heating and cooling to buildings around the state.

“We are thrilled to receive these geothermal grants from the Colorado Energy Office for the Waymire Dome and CASP tower projects,” said Lynn Baca, Chair of the Board of Commissioners. “This funding represents a major milestone in Adams County’s commitment to power all county buildings with 100% renewable energy by 2030. With these investments, we expect to save over $40,000 annually in energy costs and reduce carbon emissions by more than nine million kilograms—demonstrating both environmental leadership and fiscal responsibility.

CEO made a total of 16 awards through GEGP this funding round. Awards will support five single-structure geothermal initiatives, nine thermal energy network studies, and two thermal energy network installation initiatives. A total of 89.3% of this funding will go to initiatives that serve disproportionately impacted and low-income communities.

“By better using the heat beneath our feet to help us, we are leading the nation in innovative clean energy technologies that save Coloradans money and protect our air quality,” said Colorado Governor Jared Polis. “Investing in geothermal heating technology increases energy reliability and serves as a low-cost energy source.”

For more information on these and previously awarded projects through the GEGP, see the Colorado Energy Office Geothermal Incentive Award Tracker.

This is part of Governor Polis’ nation-leading The Heat Beneath Our Feet initiative to advance geothermal technology in the Mountain West. Although this was the last funding round through the GEGP, incentives for geothermal projects are available through the Geothermal Energy Tax Credit Offering (GETCO) through 2032 or until funding is expended.
